Let’s discuss about p0420 catalyst system. Exhaust gas comes out from the combustion of fuels such as natural gas, gasoline, petrol, diesel. Even Coal emits certain gases. Based on the type and design of the engine, the exhaust is discharged into the atmosphere through an exhaust pipe, also called a silencer.

Mostly the exhaust gas is composed of blow-by from Crankcase and unused gasoline. One of the reasons our cities remain engulfed in smog is due to the same exhaust as motor vehicle emissions contribute a lot to air pollution. The fumes from the engines lead to numerous health concerns and are responsible for up to 50,000 deaths per year. The fumes can cause lung cancer, blood cancer, and many other respiratory complications.

A catalytic converter is basically a control device of an exhaust system controlling that reduces toxic gases and pollutants in the exhaust gas. This turns the harmful pollutants into less-toxic pollutants by catalyzing a redox reaction. A redox reaction is an oxidation and a reduction reaction. Both diesel and Petrol vehicles use Catalytic converters. The catalytic converters are designed by the Environmental Protection Agency’s worldwide and the latest catalytic converters are now Euro6 compliant and also come with an AdBlue SCR system. Because a catalytic converter is designed to reduce NOx and is considered as an active engine, it has some sensors onboard that measure the level of oxygen, nitrogen and neutralizes the harmful pollutants while going out of the engine. The error code P0420 is the most common code that comes up in case the catalytic converter efficiency goes beyond a certain threshold.

In general, newer engines are fitted with a 3-way catalytic converter. A computerized closed-loop feedback fuel injection system monitors the exhaust using one or more oxygen sensors. A P0420 code is set if any problem is found in the exhaust of the vehicle. This can be due to a poor performing engine or a choked or a bad catalytic converter.

Diesel oxidation catalyst commonly known as DOC contains palladium, platinum, and aluminum oxide. They are used to catalytically oxidize the particulate matter (PM) or exhaust containing hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water.

P0420 is a very tricky code to diagnose. it involves hard to reach components like exhaust. usually, the p0420 code is set if the catalytic efficiency goes beyond a certain threshold. A lot of people think that they have fixed the fault but the check engine lights pop up again after 100km, s or so. usually, all manufacturers use one oxygen sensor before the catalytic substrate and one after the catalytic substrate.

We can also clear your car’s P0420 code permanently by increasing the threshold values of the oxygen sensors.  Our team is fully equipped to handle all matters related to DPF and AdBlue. AdBlue is a catalytic drip system that pushes a chemical through injectors in the DPF to keep the exhaust clean from any blockage and it also neutralizes the soot that is formed in the diesel engine. P0420 is also set in the case of a bad oxygen sensor.
